Film Review - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Our first film of the lecture series was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In our film lecture we were briefed on Joseph Campbell's 17 stage monomyth. (Hero's Journey)

During the film I kept an eye out for these stages of the Hero's Journey and I noticed that The call to Adventure is when there was hundreds of letters that kept showing up at his Aunt and Uncles home where he was living due to his parents dying.

The refusal of the call was actually made, not by harry himself but by the Dursley's. They go to all lengths to deny a small boy any chances of happiness. This fails though, as soon, on Harry's birthday, Hagrid shows up, to the place where the Dursley's took Harry to escape the bombard of letters at their home, to save Harry and take him to where his adventure would really begin.

Along the way Harry comes face to face with many tests, allies and enemy's.

Towards the end we have the Master of two worlds. This is displayed when Harry finishes his first year at Hogwarts. He has now conquered life in the Muggle world and the Wizarding world. His character develops throughout the entire movie and he becomes a Hero.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoy this movie, even if i have seen it many times, it will  always be a classic.
